Computer Assisted Sperm Analyzer (CASA) is a test that uses technology to check the quality of the sperm or sperm analysis.
CASA is a form of semen analysis. But instead of the manual way of analyzing the sperm, the process is actually automated.
The Difference Between Conventional Sperm Analysis Method and CASA Technology
The conventional method is that all the labs use embryologists to manually look through microscopes at sperm samples to check the condition of the sperm.
This is time-consuming as imagine having to look through millions of sperm to check for abnormalities and defects.
The embryologist have to analyze each of the sperm one by one with the naked eye using a normal microscope.
Abnormal and defective sperm may not be able to penetrate a healthy egg.
Also, an embryologist will not want to use a defective or abnormal sperm to fertilize a healthy egg!
As the sperm samples are viewed by different embryologist, there's also a risk of inconsistency in the report as each may analyze and produce different reports.
Examples of sperm abnormalities :
Low sperm count - fewer than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen. Normal sperm range count is from 15 million to greater than 200 million sperm per milliliter of semen.
Abnormal sperm - sperm shape, size and length are not normal.
The sperm head or tail has defects such as a large or misshapen head or a crooked or double tail.
Abnormal motility - sperm movement is not normal. Normal sperm will move in a progressive forward manner. Examples of abnormal sperm movement would be the sperm going round in circles (like a dog chasing its own tail) or moving haphazardly (like a drunk driver).
With Computer Assisted Sperm Analyzer (CASA) technology, the semen assessment process is standardized as the sperm analysis is done by the computer which is connected to a powerful microscope.
Sperm samples just need to be loaded on to the microscope slide and the connected computer will do the sperm analysis.
This reduces human error and increases the quality of the semen analysis results while saving time.
If the sperm quality is not good, then the next process would be to enhance the sperm selection to improve IVF treatment.
Bear in mind that CASA is a test to check the sperm quality hence the sperm sample cannot be re-used as the sperm is killed in the process.
It is used to evaluate male fertility especially for couples who are planning on getting fertility treatment.
