Ovum Pick Up (OPU)

Jan 7, 2021

The IVF process can be a daunting one but one that should not be put off till a later date.

Here's a brief summary of your IVF journey.

Step 1: Consult an IVF doctor.

Step 2: Ovarian stimulation is a process where daily doses of hormones are administered for your ovaries to produce more eggs.

Step 3: Egg retrieval or Ovum Pick Up (OPU) is performed 34 to 36 hours after the final trigger.

In the ovum pick up procedure, the mature eggs will be collected from the ovaries by ultrasound-guided aspiration.

Step 4: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a medical procedure performed as part of IVF by which a single healthy sperm cell is injected directly into each matured egg.

Step 5: There are two types of embryo transfer methods:

a) Fresh embryo transfer

It means embryo transfer few days after egg retrieval, hence we call it fresh

b) Freeze-all cycle and Transfer later

In cases where fresh embryo transfer is not suitable, fertility specialist will suggest to freeze all of the available embryos.

Patient can come back for frozen thawed embryo transfer as soon as next period cycle.

Step 6: Take a pregnancy test to find out if you're pregnant!
